Will Toyota maintain its stronghold in the hybrid market and continue to exceed expectations?

April proved to be a monumental month for Toyota as the automaker achieved two significant milestones in the hybrid market. Not only did monthly deliveries of Toyota hybrids surpass 10,000 units for the first time, but they also accounted for over half of the brand’s total sales. With 10,972 hybrid vehicles sold, Toyota claimed 52.8% of its overall sales of 20,771 vehicles. Furthermore, an impressive 66% of all hybrid vehicles sold in Australia in April were Toyotas.

The Toyota RAV4 emerged as the best-selling vehicle in Australia during April, with 5,857 units sold. This marked a new record for the mid-sized SUV and surpassing the previous month’s record. Interestingly, a staggering 94% of these RAV4 sales, totaling 5,504 units, were hybrid models.

Although the RAV4 has gained immense popularity, it has only secured the top spot on the Australian sales charts three times in its history, previously achieving this feat in July and August 2020. Toyota has been making efforts to reduce wait times for the RAV4 and other hybrid models like the Corolla hatch and C-HR, as these vehicles have faced considerable demand.

Toyota anticipates that average wait times for the RAV4, Corolla hatch, and C-HR will return to normal by the end of June. This means customers can expect wait times of three to four months or potentially even less.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing, and franchise operations, emphasized that the record deliveries signify the strong demand for fuel-efficient hybrids and the company’s success in reducing customer wait times. Despite the assumption that this achievement is solely driven by historic demand, Hanley highlighted that customer orders in April remained high, signifying a growing interest in practical, capable, and affordable hybrid vehicles among Australians.

In Australia, Toyota now exclusively offers hybrid power for models such as the Yaris, Yaris Cross, and C-HR. Other popular Toyota models like the Camry, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Kluger, and RAV4 also come with hybrid options. However, Toyota does not currently offer hybrid body-on-frame utes or SUVs in its Australian showrooms. Nevertheless, the brand has introduced a mild-hybrid version of its HiLux ute, and a hybrid version of the new-generation Prado has been unveiled overseas, though its availability in the local market remains uncertain.
