The electric MG ZS EV is set to receive a significant update later this year, moving to the brand’s new-generation electric vehicle platform. Reports indicate that the switch will happen before the end of 2024, offering improved performance and optimised battery power.
The electric MG ZS EV is in line for a major update later this year, with overseas reports suggesting the popular SUV will soon switch to the brand’s new-generation electric vehicle (EV) platform.
Previous reports hinted at a departure from the current architecture, which is based on the petrol-powered version of the SUV and not optimized for battery power. However, UK publication Autocar reports that the switch will take place before the end of 2024.
The MG ZS EV, which entered production in China in 2018, is expected to move to the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that currently underpins the MG 4 hatchback. This move is aimed at improving the SUV’s performance and battery power.
In 2023, the MG ZS’s petrol and electric versions combined for 29,258 sales, with the ZS EV accounting for only 2,794 of those sales. It was outsold by the newer MG 4 stablemate, which had 3,134 sales.
Autocar also suggests that the MG 4 electric hatchback, based on the MSP platform, will spawn a longer wagon variant for the UK market. This new variant will replace the ageing MG 5 Estate.
It’s important to note that the MG 5 available in the UK and Europe is different from the MG 5 sedan sold in Australia. The UK version is a rebadged Roewe i5, while the Australian version remains a sedan.
In Australia, the MG 5 is only available as a sedan. The brand does not offer wagons to local buyers, with hatchbacks and SUVs making up the majority of its lineup.
According to Autocar, the new MG 4 wagon, referred to as the new MG 5 Estate, will be based on the same EV platform as the hatchback. However, it is expected to grow in size and switch to a rear-mounted motor, offering a different layout compared to the current model.
The publication speculates that a performance-focused, all-wheel drive version of the wagon may be in the works, similar to the MG 4 XPower. However, this has not been confirmed yet.
As of January 2024, the MG 4 was the brand’s third best-selling model behind the ZS and the soon-to-be-replaced MG3. It surpassed the ageing HS and the new MG 5 sedan in sales.
